Michael's Time at Upper Canada College

Michael attended Upper Canada College from 1992 through 2003. Upon graduation from UCC, Michael applied to numerous US Ivy League Colleges – and with the exception of Princeton, where he was “wait-listed”, he was accepted at each – Harvard being one of them. After much soul-searching, Michael went with his “gut” feeling and opted for Georgetown University, Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.

Throughout his years at Upper Canada College, Michael was an active member of the student body, being involved in and showing prowess in all aspects of school life – academics, athletics, extra-curricular programs and leadership. He was World Affairs Conference Program Co-Chair (2002 - 2003), involved with Horizons Tutoring Partnership (2000 - 03) and co-founder, Horizons Arts Program which introduces students to music. During 2001 - 2002, he was Yearbook Business Editor of UCC’s College Times. In 2001, he was one of three UCC students selected to participate in the Ontario Educational Leadership Camp.

As elected Head of McHugh’s House, Michael was supportive of the broadest range of activities and students, paying particular attention to the youngest boys and the newest members. His leadership was characterized by effectiveness, respect and natural humility. As the Captain of the Varsity Tennis Team, Michael was a good player, the best team-mate and a model ambassador for UCC. He was also a member of the basketball team starting in the Prep (Captain of the Championship Team in Spring ‘98) through graduation and, in character, regularly led the team in assists.

Throughout his 11 years at UCC, Michael was an excellent student, a gifted tennis player, a benevolent leader and mentor to his charges in McHughs. He was heavily involved in current affairs and sought out speakers who could address sensitive local and world issues to raise the individual and collective consciousness of his fellow students. Michael was very committed to bring the world to UCC and having UCC students engage themselves in broader global questions and issues.

Michael always had a passion for travel and a desire to experience other cultures and to raise the collective consciousness of his peers to international issues.

In keeping with Michael’s interest and passion for international relations, the Michael Evan Jurist Memorial Fund supports the UCC programs established in Michael's memory.
