Michael E. Jurist Class of 2003 Scholarship

Programs > Upper Canada College > The Michael E. Jurist Class of 2003 Scholarship

Originally called the Class of 2003 Fund, the peers and alums of Michael’s graduating year decided to rename the fund in Michael’s name and memory, calling it The Michael E. Jurist (Class of 2003) Fund .

In 2013 the fund was turned into a scholarship to support a deserving young man who, like Michael, is involved in and takes advantage of all the College has to offer. The recipient shall possess strong academic and athletic skills (with a preference for tennis or basketball), have an interest in community service and internationalism and be of outstanding character as was the young man for whom this scholarship is named.

2014-15
The first recipient of this newly-established Class of 2003 Scholarship was Richard William Houser, who joined Wedd’s House this year from Moncton, New Brunswick. Richard, who has already become a valued new member of the UCC community, has embraced UCC’s strong academic programming and has especially enjoyed developing his language skills in Core French and Interdisciplinary Studies. He has also been able to advance his superior athletic abilities, representing UCC on the Varsity Basketball Team and the Varsity Volleyball Team.

2015-16, 2016-17
Dom Peters, has received the Class of 2003 Scholarship 2 years in a row. He tackles the challenging IB curriculum with strategic determination. He loves biology, geography and learning about sports medicine in his physical education class. Dominick is a stellar player on the hockey rink and football field. He proudly helped his teammates capture a CISAA football championship this fall. In the coming year, Dominick is excited to expand his involvement in special interest clubs.

2017-18
This year’s recipient, a Year 6 student who recently joined UCC, has taken every opportunity to participate and excel in both academic and extracurricular activities. He credits being an integral member of both the Basketball and Soccer teams to teaching him a lot about teamwork, perseverance, time management and commitment. His favorite academic subjects include English, Math and Design as he believes they “help him to think outside the box and broaden his thinking”.
