Programs > Georgetown University > The Duel in the District

Because of Michael’s ardor for tennis and Club Sports, the members of the Board and team members of Georgetown’s Club Tennis established “The Duel in the District” a two-day Invitational National College Teams Tournament, hosted by Georgetown annually, in his honor.

"Teammate Michael Jurist died suddenly in July 2007 at the age of 22. Michael was one of the first-ever members of Georgetown University Club Tennis. Known to teammates as “The Gavel,” Michael participated in many matches and tournaments, including Nationals in Cary, NC during his senior year. We wish to thank Michael’s parents, Paul and Vesna Jurist, for their support and their help in organizing this tournament. We cannot think of a better way to honor Michael than a fun, competitive tournament played on campus at the University he loved."

Duel in the District 2015

The 2014/2015 Georgetown Club Tennis team and season was put to a test this year, at the Seventh annual “Duel in the District” -- they found themselves with no on-site tennis courts, thanks to the University’s decision to build an expanded Athletic Center. But, that didn’t deter them. In fact, it spurred this year’s Board to find and negotiate a new site and sponsor - Rock Creek Tennis Center, home of the Citi Open, an ATP event. With ten courts at their disposal, GU Club Tennis hosted a record sixteen College teams on March 21-22 under relatively cool, but sunny, skies.

Teams included:

  1. Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
  2. Towson University, Maryland
  3. University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
  4. University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA
  5. Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
  6. George Washington University, Washington, DC

James Madison University won a newly-instituted Sportsmanship Award. A good time was had by all.

On March 19/20, 2016, Georgetown Club Tennis found themselves in a predicament -- hosting the Eighth annual “Duel in the District” - the first MEJ “Duel” plagued by rain since its establishment in 2009. Well- prepared, they managed to allocate the 16 participating College teams to indoor courts in Virginia and DC on the Saturday, the first day of play. On Sunday, the teams started play indoors and then, finally, outdoors. Despite the inclement weather, team spirits weren’t dampened and keen competition and great camraderie reigned.
